ElectroForce® BioDynamic® Test Instruments
Characterization of Biomaterials and Tissues in a Biological Environment

The Bose® BioDynamic® test instrument provides precise characterization of biomaterials and biological specimens within a closed saline or cell culture media environment. It is available either as a dedicated desk-top instrument or as an accessory to an existing ElectroForce system. Either way, the ability to precisely load specimens and simulate biological conditions in a single instrument opens up new research possibilities for medical device development and tissue engineering.

The instrument can be used for the evaluation of a variety of specimens, including biomaterials, acellular scaffolds and cell-seeded scaffolds, native tissue samples and tissue-engineered constructs. Since the BioDynamic test instrument can be used to simulate in vivo conditions for the culture and testing of three-dimensional samples, it can be a valuable tool to bridge the gap between basic in vitro exploratory studies in culture dishes and in vivo animal experiments.

The BioDynamic test instrument combines precise loading technology with environmental technologies and fully-automated computer control and software. Application areas include characterization of arterial tissue and myocardial patches for cardiovascular tissue engineering, as well as bone, cartilage, ligament and spinal disk tissue systems for musculoskeletal applications.

Desktop BioDynamic Instrument

The desk-top instrument is a compact design that is suitable for incubator use in a biomaterials or cell culture laboratory. The instrument is available in a single-axis or dual-axis configuration, and optional capabilities are available depending on the application. The test chamber can be easily removed from the motor assembly to accommodate experiment setup, or to conduct experiments with multiple test chambers on a revolving basis.

The desktop model is provided as a complete system with a media pumping system for versatile laboratory experiments. For tests requiring a culture environment, a nutrient reservoir can be integrated with the system, and the testing assembly can be located in an incubator for more precise temperature/environmental requirements.

TestBench BioDynamic Configurations

The TestBench system provides added flexibility due to its modular approach, and can be used for tissue engineering applications that require higher loading conditions than those available in the desktop package. The BioDynamic instrument chamber can be removed from the configuration so that the TestBench system can be used for general materials testing and component loading applications such as bending and multi-axial testing.

ElectroForce® 3200 Instrument Configuration

The ElectroForce 3200 instrument is the ideal choice for dynamic materials characterization, and the addition of a BioDynamic instrument assembly for tissue engineering is a natural design evolution. When the test chamber is disconnected from the system, the closed-loop condition can be maintained to avoid any disruption and contamination for time-dependent experiments.

BioDynamic Test Instrument Applications

The Vascular package provides a closed saline or cell culture environment for tissue evaluation with dynamic pressure excitation. This configuration provides single-specimen loading of vascular tissue, scaffolds, along with tissue-engineered constructs, and other related biomaterials. The vascular assembly includes attachment fittings and catheter pressure transducers to measure internal and external specimen pressures.

The Orthopaedic package, applicable to ligaments, cartilage, and bone, provides a closed saline or cell culture media environment with direct axial loading for musculoskeletal applications. The BioDynamic test instrument provides single-specimen evaluation of ligaments, ligament constructs, scaffolds, and other related biomaterials that require direct sample loading. A number of gripping options and accessories are available depending on the particular application.
